The Cincinnati Watch Company is a watch micro-brand owned by entrepreneurs Rick Bell and Mark Stegman.
Rick, a raving mechanical watch enthusiast, and Mark, owner of The Langley Group, a digital marketing company, first teamed up in 2016 with Build Your Own Watch, a company catering to like-minded watch enthusiasts interested in assembling their own mechanical watches.
The Build Your Own Watch "Series One" was our first watch design configurable to over 800 designs. Users could choose their dial color, sweeping second hand color, strap color combo, hand style, and if they want the rotor of the Miyota 8215 hand engraved by a local Cincinnati Rose Engine artist!
Build Your Own Watch incorporated local Cincinnati artists and machining industry to provide special add on options like having your movement's rotor hand engraved on a Rose Engine Lathe, having your initials engraved on the buckle, and even having any design skillfully printed on the the client's watch dial.
We designed watches and shipped them in parts separately; then provided free video instruction on how to assemble your own watch. Our Build Your Own Watch videos still receive 4-8 viewed hours a day.
It is any builder of watches and watch designer's dream to start their own watch brand. Build Your Own Watch evolved into the Cincinnati Watch Company, a brand focused on the traditional watch buyer, offering quality-crafted watches inspired by Cincinnati and the institutions that make up American Communities.
In the original conversation that Rick & Mark discussed forming Build Your Own Watch the two shared the same idea of creating a watch modeled after the Union Terminal clock. Pictured above, Rick Bell shows off the Cincinnati Watch Company's "Union Terminal Watch" at the Union Terminal Gala in 2018. We donated thousands of dollars to the Cincinnati Children's Museum at the Union Terminal from the sales of the Union Terminal Watch.
Our Mission: We Give Back
Cincinnati Watch Company is committed to giving back to the community. A portion of the sale of every watch we produce benefits valuable local Cincinnati institutions.
In 2018 we partnered with the Cincinnati Museum Center creating the limited edition "Union Terminal Watch", a watch made in homage of the art deco clock on the face of The Union Terminal to mark the historic completion of two years of restoration that literally saved the art deco "Temple to Transportation".
We were most fortunate to partner with the Tri-State Warbird Museum on our pilot watch the "P-40M Mechanical", the design inspired by the 8-day mechanical clock in the cockpit dashboard of the award winning restoration P-40M RNZAF by the Warbird Museum. The Tri-State Warbird Museum has a full time restoration crew working to restore historical WW2 warbirds to flying condition.
We Believe in Design
Cincinnati Watch Company spends years working on a single watch design; appearance, parts, quality of the construction and ease of serviceability are all considered. We are not using “off the shelf” designs, each watch is a unique custom developed timepiece.
We Demand Quality
Cincinnati Watch Company uses only Swiss or Japanese made movements known for reliability. Owner Rick Bell personally tests and inspects every watch before it is sent to a client. This includes adjusting the watch for accuracy and inspecting the watch for defects. Any watch not meeting Rick’s strict standards gets totally disassembled and re-built on Rick's workbench in Cincinnati.
Cincinnati Watch Company is always in design mode, of course we are working on next years watch today. We hope to continue to design new watches while partnering with great American institutions. It is our short term goal to bring assembly to Ohio and open our own shop in Cincinnati.
